Jeeraka (cumin) kanji or cumin rice soup is special ifthar dish in Malabar. It's a comfort food for all. Taking the rice soup as warm makes a real satisfying tummy.
Ingredients:- Broken rice (podi ari)- 1 cup (or basmati rice)
- Grated coconut- 1/4 cup
- Cumin seeds-1 tbsp
- Salt-to taste
- Shallots /pearl onions- 7 nos
- Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
- Wash the rice well and boil it with enough water to cook well. (until the rice gets a mashed consistency).
- Grind coconut grated with turmeric powder, cumin seeds, shallots and salt in to a smooth paste by adding little water.
- When the rice porridge almost gets cooked add the grinder paste.
- Cook for another 10-15 minutes and switch off the flame.
- Serve hot with some pickle...!!
- Note: You can season the kanji with some fried shallots if you wish to (fry thinly chopped shallots in ghee)
