Jeeraka Kanji / Ramadan Special Rice Porridge

Jeeraka (cumin) kanji or cumin rice soup is special ifthar dish in Malabar. It's a comfort food for all. Taking the rice soup as warm makes a real satisfying tummy. 
Ingredients:
  1. Broken rice (podi ari)- 1 cup (or basmati rice)
  2. Grated coconut- 1/4 cup
  3. Cumin seeds-1 tbsp
  4. Salt-to taste
  5. Shallots /pearl onions- 7 nos
  6. Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
Preparation:
  • Wash the rice well and boil it with enough water to cook well. (until the rice gets a mashed consistency).
  • Grind coconut grated with turmeric powder, cumin seeds, shallots and salt in to a smooth paste by adding little water.
  • When the rice porridge almost gets cooked add the grinder paste.
  • Cook for another 10-15 minutes and switch off the flame.
  • Serve hot with some pickle...!!
  • Note: You can season the kanji with some fried shallots if you wish to (fry thinly chopped shallots in ghee)
