Kozhi Pidi / Chicken Stuffed Rice Dumplings


Kozhi pidi is a Malabar special complete meal suitable for breakfast or dinner. Also it is a Ramadan special recipe .The rice dumplings cooked along with chicken and rich coconut milk is really yummy and delicious. It is better to have less spicy. No any other side dish is needed along with it. Just take a spoon and finish it.
Ingredients For the Chicken Filling:
  1. Chicken- 1/4 kg
  2. Onion-1
  3. Ginger, garlic, green chilly chopped-1tbsp
  4. Turmeric powder- 1/2tsp.
  5. Pepper powder-1tsp
  6. Coriander powder-1/2 tsp.
  7. Salt-to taste
  8. Garam masala-1/4tsp
  9. Coriander leaves-few
Preparation of Filling:
  • Cook the chicken in a pressure cooker with salt, turmeric and water for 3 vessels by adding 1/4 cup water.
  • After cools down drain the chicken stock water and reserve it for gravy.
  • Remove any bones from the chicken and mince in to small pieces (or give a quick blend).
  • In a pan heat a teaspoon of oil; sauté onion.
  • Add ginger, garlic, green chilly chopped; sauté till the raw smell goes off.
  • Add all the powders for masala.
  • Add minced chicken and coriander leaves in to it.
Ingredients For The Rice Dumplings:
  1. Roasted Rice Flour-1 cup
  2. Water- 1 1/4 cup
  3. Salt-to taste
Preparation
  • Boil water by adding salt,
  • When it boils add rice four; mix well for a minute in low flame and switch off the flame.
  • After few minutes knead the dough in to smooth. (knead when it is hot; but that can manageable with your hands.)
  • Divide the dough in to small equal bowls.
  • Roll each bowl in to a small circle with your hands or by using a rolling pin.( of half inch thickness). (as shown in the picture below).
  • Put a small portion of chicken filling inside it and cover the dough by making a bowl shape again (stick the edges by pressing tightly with your hands) and gently roll it in your hands to make an ovel shape.
  • Steam cook these prepared dumplings for about 15 minutes to cook.
  • Now prepare the gravy and add theses cooked dumplings in to it.
Ingredients For The Gravy:
  1. Oil-1 1/2 tbsp
  2. Cumin seeds- 1/4 tbsp
  3. Onion extra thinly chopped-1 
  4. Ginger garlic green chilly crushed- 1 tbsp
  5. Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
  6. Chilly Powder- 1/2 tsp
  7. Coriander Powder-1 tsp
  8. Garam masala powder-1/2 tsp
  9. Pepper Powder-1 tsp
  10. Salt-to taste
  11. Chicken Stock Water-1 cup (from the above chicken cooked water)
  12. Thick Coconut Milk-1 cup
  13. Coriander leaves chopped-1 handful
Preparation:
  • Heat oil in a pan; splutter cumin seeds, add onion chopped and saute until golden in color.
  • Add ginger garlic and green chilly crushed; saute until raw smell goes off.
  • Add turmeric powder, chilly powder, coriander powder, salt and garam masala powder one by one after mixing in each addition at low flame.
  • Add chicken stock water; when it boils add stuffed rice dumplings and thick coconut milk.
  • Coat the rice dumplings evenly with the gravy. (mix gently).
  • Cook for about 5 minutes or until the gravy starts thickens.
  • Switch off the flame by sprinkling pepper powder and coriander leaves on top.
  • Serve warm and enjoy the lovey dumplings!!!!
